Did you know that the Irish Gaelic language first touched down in Australia in the year 1788? Australia was introduced to English and Irish Gaelic at nearly the same time. It was during these times, that Irish convicts were sent to Australia to do hard labor, many speaking only a little English. Due to the fact that the Australian terrain was so brutal to the first settlers, the British needed people to sort of break in the land, and make it more hospitable. They would convict Irish people of petty crimes, such as stealing some bread or a pair of shoes, and then send them Down Under to do a stretch of hard labor. Many of these Irish convicts died while there, and a large portion of the remaining people simply never left Australia. It was more or less a way to extort slave labor out of the Irish, something that the English have a long history of doing in their colonies. We hope you enjoyed this interesting Irish Gaelic fact.
