Did you know that the Gaels are an ethno-linguistic group that was started in Ireland? They eventually would go on to spread to the Isle of Man and Scotland, both by way of conquest and immigration. If you hear someone use the word Gael, then they are very likely referring to someone of Irish, Scottish, or Manx descent. I will say however that despite the fact that the term is accurate when applied to one of the three later groups mentioned, that using the term is somewhat rare. Generally speaking people tend to use the world Celtic more often than Gael, however the term Celtic is often misused. So in the most rigid application of the word Gael, you are not actually referring to a nationality or ethnic group, but of anyone who speaks one of the three Goidelic languages. It's a bit confusing, as the term is some what archaic, however I hope this brings some clarity to the subject. Thanks for reading through this fun fact.
