Did you know that the oldest written form of Irish Gaelic is called Primitive Irish? This language was preserved in the Ogham inscriptions, and dates back to the 4th century. Our modern knowledge of this form of Irish Gaelic is not complete, as only small fragments of the language remain in written form. Most examples of it are in the form of personal names, which hardly gives a deep insight into the full vocabulary, which would obviously help scholars understand just how different it was from today's Modern Irish. The language is thought to have gone extinct around the 6th century, at which point Old Irish took it's place, at least in writing. All languages have periods of evolution, as they adapt to the constantly changing world that we live in. Our staff would like to thank you for reading through this Irish Gaelic fact.
