Did you know that the three Goidelic languages are all derived from Irish Gaelic? In early history, Irish Gaelic used to be solely restricted to the island of Ireland itself. It wasn't until around the third century, that the Celts began to expand towards the Isle of Man and Scotland. The Romans called these Irish people Scoti. Historians and scholars are somewhat uncertain as to whether or not the Irish Celts flooded into Scotland and the Isle of Man by conquest, or through immigration. It was probably a combination of both. Before the Irish Celts landed in Scotland, the major culture and language of the area was Pictish, established by the Picts. Pictish and other tribal languages of the region were eventually dominated and wiped out by the Gaelic language and culture.
