Did you know that according to an official 2001 census report, that there are currently a dozen people who speak Newfoundland Irish as a native tongue? This finding has caused some controversy within the Newfoundland academic community, as Newfoundland Irish was formally declared extinct, with it's demise being listed as the mid 20th century. Despite the fact that this has been refuted by numerous people, scholars in the area still support the declaration that the language is extinct. They claim that the Newfoundland Irish spoken today, isn't of the exact same dialect as the Newfoundland Irish that widely spoken in the region for centuries. As mentioned elsewhere within our website, once a language has been formally declared extinct, it is very hard to have that declaration overturned by any academic community, even with rock solid evidence pointing to the contrary. We hope that you enjoyed this fun Irish Gaelic fact.
