Did you know that the Ultach Trust was setup to try and increase the interest towards Irish Gaelic amongst Irish Protestants in Northern Ireland? Shortly after the trust was set up, DUP politician Sammy Wilson made fun of the initiative, and called Irish Gaelic a leprechaun language. This insult prompted many loyalists, in turn, to insult the Ulster Scots dialect, which is mostly promoted by Unionists, calling it a do it yourself language for Orangemen. Despite the back and forth between the sides, interest in preserving both mainstream Irish Gaelic and the Ulster Scots dialect seems to have a unified support network amongst Northern Irish citizens, regardless of their political affiliations. There have been many recent attempts to shore up support for the language in the region, and to reverse some of it's decline. While the previous decades have been harsh, there are some new signs that Irish Gaelic is beginning to grow again.
