Did you know that the dialect of Irish Gaelic spoken in Northern Ireland is called Ulster Irish? According to the last government census taken in 2001, there are approximately 170,000 people within Northern Ireland who claim to have some knowledge of Irish Gaelic. The highest concentrations of Irish Gaelic speakers in the north seem to be located in and around Belfast, Derry City, Central Tyrone, and other major population centers. So with all the numbers taken into account, slightly over 10% percent of Northern Ireland has some grasp on Irish Gaelic, with varying degrees of proficiency. Obviously Gaelic revival efforts are much weaker in Northern Ireland, because of the sharply divided communities. There are however numerous media programs that offer Irish Gaelic language programs, such as BBC Radio Ulster. It should be noted that almost all of the Irish Gaelic media available in the Republic, is also available in the North.
