Irish Gaelic Fact
Did you now that there are numerous Irish speaking regions of the province Munster? These native Irish Gaelic speaking parts of Ireland are called Gaeltacht, a word that literally translates to mean Irish speaking area. The current total population of the country's Gaeltacht areas is about 92,000, or roughly 2.2% of Ireland's total population. These treasured parts of the country have been in steady decline for decades, and so the Irish government has taken a proactive position towards helping them to survive and thrive. The government will offer a 260 euro grant to any family in Ireland who has a child that speaks Irish Gaelic at a native proficiency level. The grant which is called Scéim Labhairt na Gaeilge, is the only program in Europe that offers to pay it's citizens for speaking the official language of the country.
