Did you know that there are estimated to be roughly 37 million Americans with Irish ancestry? This number accounts for nearly 12% of the entire population of the United States. If you wondered how an Irish Gaelic revival has sparked in the United States, simply look at the shear volume of Irish descendants living within the country. The census report that concluded these figures, was take in 2008. While most of these people do not speak any Gaelic, there is a growing percentage of them that can understand many of the language's basic words and phrases, which is the result of self teaching. In the coming decades however, I would expect the number of Irish Americans who speak Gaelic to dramatically increase, as the availability of modern Irish language courses are popping up all over the country. To date there has never been such a large and widespread US based interest in Irish Gaelic, giving hope to many who wish to see it preserved.
