Is Welsh Or Cymraeg Classified As A Goidelic Language?
Evan from Philadelphia Pennsylvania would like to have the following question answered. Is Welsh or Cymraeg classified as a Goidelic language? The answer is no, although the language is related to Gaelic, it is not classified as a Goidelic language. Welsh, or Cymraeg as it's called in it's mother tongue, is a Celtic language of the Brythonic branch. Welsh is closely related to both the Breton and Cornish languages, however it is only distantly related to Gaelic. According to the last census report, there are roughly 660,000 Welsh speakers in Wales itself, and several thousand more amongst the Welsh diaspora around the globe. Like Irish, Scottish, and Manx Gaelic, Welsh has been in somewhat of a decline in recent decades, with only 20% of the country speaking it at a fluent proficiency level. It should be noted however that Welsh is in a similar situation as Irish Gaelic, where it's in slow decline, however it could bounce back at any time.
